STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The College uses diagnostic testing (including the Year 7 and 8 Government tests in literacy (ELLA) and numeracy (SNAP), primary school recommendations, information from parents and the expertise of teaching staff to identify students with special needs. These students are taught in mixed ability classes and their progress is monitored and assistance adjusted as they move through the College. They are included in reading and comprehension programs, provided with exam support if necessary and are assisted with learning by teacher-aides.

EXTENSION PROGRAMS

From time to time, programs are conducted during the year to develop and extend the skills of students with special aptitude in curriculum areas. These include additional classes in some subjects (English, History and Mathematics), the College band, other music groups and various interschool competitions such as debating, mock trial, tournament of the minds and university extension courses. Students have been accelerated in the past at the College in consultation with parents and the student themselves.

CAREER EDUCATION

The College has a full time careers adviser to help students with choice of subjects for Years 11 and 12 and to assist them in choosing employment, both full and part time work, and post school education. In the careers office, there is a rsource room with excellent printed and video material.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

St Dominic's College runs an Outdoor Education program through camps for each Year Group. The aim of this program is to develop students' skills in a variety of recreational activities, to foster personal character and to develop positive relationships between students and teachers. The program provides a sequential course for the four years, developing skills of a higher order each year. All activities are supervised by accredited staff of "Life Education Centre" - Somerset outdoor education camp, as well as a member of staff from the College. Some of the activities conducted on these camps include archery, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, abseiling, rock climbing, mountain biking and initiative challenges.
