“Enable the Future”
The Year 11 Design and Technology class, under the leadership of Mr Zammit, have joined the “e-NABLE Project”; a worldwide community building prosthetic limbs for those in need across the globe. The e-NABLE Community is an amazing group of individuals from all over the world who are using their 3D printers to create free 3D printed hands and arms for those in need of an upper limb assistive device.
The e-NABLE project connects students and clients in need of prosthetic limbs. Students are collaborating with clients in terms of the kind of designs the client would like, liaising with occupational health therapists and other experts and making design choices together to ensure that the final product meets the clients’ needs. Using 4 of the 3D printers available at the College, a prosthetic hand can be created within a day, with careful planning and supervision from the Design students.
Tom Fruhstuck and Bailey Squires in Year 11 have already begun creating a hand for a client in need of the prosthetic limb.
“The most significant part of the project is helping those in need, and it is so satisfying to know that even at 16 years of age I can improve other people’s lives” Tom
They have already started discussing how they could crowd source further funding to expand the project, providing more help for people around the world, across more schools.
“We have the resources available at the College, and why wouldn’t we use those resources to help others? I think it is a really cool way to use technology” Bailey
