St Dominic’s College has continued to strive for excellence in the sporting community in 2018 with a variety of accomplishments. The College has once again persisted in maintaining and delivering a program that encompasses all students through the provision of recreational and competitive activities; as well as representative opportunities. The recreational format adopted in 2017 has continued onwards throughout the course of this year; as a result, students have once again had the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of sports. The recreational program has included activities such as Ten Bin Bowling, Aqua Golf, Roller Blading, Indoor Cricket, YMCA, Fitness, Tennis, Basketball and Ice Skating. The College recognises the importance of student engagement in regular physical activity in settings that will also enhance students’ leadership and social skills.
Representative sporting opportunities were once again provided in abundance to our students here at the College. Students were given pathways in sports that included: AFL, Athletics, Cricket, Basketball, Baseball, Rugby League, Rugby 7’s, Swimming, Cross Country, Softball, Football (Soccer), Touch Football, Golf, Tennis and Chess. Amongst these sports were a range of distinguished achievements including age champions, premierships and individual representative honours. A few notable individual achievements included our Open’s Basketball team winning a fourth consecutive NSWCCC title; Zachary Cini’s selection in the Australian Secondary School Boys Rugby League team to tour the United Kingdom at the end of the year; Jaxen Edgar being announced the Metropolitan Catholic Schools Junior Sportsman of the Year; James Neilly breaking the U/18’s St Dominic’s record in Long Jump; Liam Dodrell’s selection in the NSW All Schools Cricket team; and Mr Zammit in his inaugural year as House Coordinator winning both the Athletics and Swimming Carnival House Championships.
Outstanding achievements such as those previously mentioned would not be possible without the continued support of our hardworking and dedicated staff. Thank you to all our staff who supervise our recreational sport venues each Thursday. Thank you to each of our staff members who voluntarily give their own time to train, coach and, or, manage our representative teams outside of the usual school hours. It may be easy to look past the amount of extra time and dedication our staff often give to create opportunities for our students to participate and develop in their chosen sporting fields. Without the willingness of our staff, in amongst their usual teaching demands to put themselves forward to coach or manage, we would not have such success. Thank you to Mr G Keightley and the College maintenance team who consistently ensure that we have the best fields in the MCS competition. Thank you to our administration staff for their continued support of the sporting programs.
I would also like to express my thanks to Assistant Sports Coordinator Mr J Kilbourne, whose expertise and willingness to assist in all facets of Sports at the College is greatly appreciated. Mr Kilbourne’s dedication, commitment and enthusiasm for sport at the College does not waiver and plays a pivotal role in our College’s success at all levels.
In 2019 There will be a variety of new opportunities in the sporting domain commencing with a fantastic opportunity for our Opens College Soccer team to travel to Nudgee College, Brisbane for the National EREA Championships. Such tours are fantastic experiences for our students that should not be taken for granted. Mr Ronchetti’s passion for sport and backing for such events is crucial. On behalf of the Sports Department we thank our College Principal for his support and investment in these events.

MCS Junior Sportsman of the Year 2018
Congratulations to Jaxen Edgar of Year 7 who was recently announced as the MCS Junior Sportsman of the Year in 2019. This is an outstanding achievement to be the recipient of this award that spans across all ten of the Metropolitan Catholic Schools. Well done Jaxen!
Downie Trophy Round 1
St Dominic’s College 1st Grade Cricket team played their round 2 game against Patrician Brothers Blacktown on Monday 29th October. We won the toss and elected to bat first against a competitive Blacktown bowling attack. Unfortunately, we lost a couple of early wickets, but Lachlan Jacobs steadied the innings. Flynn Caston and Ryan Freeman were also very impressive, with putting together a 98-run partnership. St Dominic’s College ended up with 7/197 after 50 overs.
We had a great start to our bowling with one early Blacktown wicket. Unfortunately, we missed a number of key chances throughout the first session, with Blacktown in a dominant position at 1/109. After some tactical changes made to place pressure on the Blacktown line-up, the boys fought back and bowled out Blacktown for 10/174. The next game for the 1st Grade Cricket Team is against either St Columbus or Patrician Brothers Fairfield in the next couple of weeks.

NSWCCC Junior Basketball Championships
In week 5, the Junior CCC Basketball team travelled to Penrith Basketball Stadium to compete in the NSWCCC Basketball tournament. The team found some early rhythm and defeated St John Paul College, Coffs Harbour 49 points to 15. In Game 2, Dom’s defeated St Andrews, Marayong 63-21, before a final convincing win against De La Salle, Caringbah 75 points to 14. In the pool matches, Dom’s had scored 187 points and only conceded 50, boasting the best defence in the tournament after Day 1. On Day 2, Dom’s set up a much-anticipated semi-final match against Blacktown Pats with a win over St Joseph’s, Lochinvar. Our semi-final match was a tough fought bout, coming out on top 34 points to 23. Joining us in the final was Holy Spirit, Bellambi, who had the best offense in the tournament. The match was neck and neck in the first half, with some unlucky baskets not falling for us. In the second half though, Holy Spirit turned on the heat and ran away eventual winners 40 points to 24. The Dom’s team had performed outstanding across both days. The team will resume their MCS seasons and spend the next 12 months preparing to face Holy Spirit again in next year’s Intermediate competition. Congratulations to all the boys who represented the College with pride at the 2018 NSWCCC Basketball tournament.

NSWCCC Intermediate Basketball
On Monday the 12th and Tuesday the 13th of November our Y9/10 Basketball team competed in the CCC State Championships held at Penrith Basketball Stadium. After 3 comfortable victories on day one we started the quarter finals on day two against St Mary’s College Gateshead. In a tough and bruising encounter, we managed to finally pull away in the dying stages to win by 5.
The semi-final saw us take on Revesby in a much-anticipated match. Revesby were a very big team and we knew we would be undersized in every position. In a see-sawing contest we looked to have snatched victory with only seconds remaining before they shot a huge 3 pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation. Fortunately for us a dominate overtime period saw us come out victors by 6 points.
The grand final saw us play Mackillop College from Port Macquarie. With the knowledge that they were the only other CCC school attending the national championships in Melbourne in December, we knew we had our work cut out for us. We started very slowly and seemed to lack energy, possibly the result of two tough games in the morning. We found ourselves down by 10 at halftime. We managed to show a lot of character in the second half and stayed with them but unfortunately, they proved to be the better team on the day running out champions by 4 points.
This tournament proved to be a great warm-up to our journey to the national championships in Melbourne in December. With the boys showing tremendous teamwork and spirit throughout the entire tournament I’m sure we can put up a good showing that the College can be proud of.

NSW All Schools Touch Football
On Friday 16th November the Y7/8 Touch Football team went to the State Carnival after winning the regional comp earlier this year.
We knew it was going to be a challenging day with the best sides from all NSW in attendance. We started the day well with a convincing 6-1 victory. The opposition got increasingly harder as the day went but we finished top of our pool with 3 victories and 2 draws from our 5 games.
This put us into a contest with Kildare College, Wagga Wagga. The game was free flowing and fast paced which eventually worked against us and we went down 3-1. A disappointing end to the day but we finished in the top 5 schools in NSW which is a fabulous result.
A big thanks to the boys for their efforts in both competitions, the parents who supported us on the day and Mr. Zammit for managing the team.

Cameron Gill
Congratulations to Cameron Gill of Year 10 who recently competed at the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships. Following some outstanding results at the NSWCCC Athletics Championships earlier in the year, Cameron ran a Personal Best time and finished 3rd in the 800m final. Cameron has overcome injury this year and his resilience and determination are characteristic to be admired. Great work Cameron!
EREA National Football (Soccer) Championships 2019
Congratulations to the students selected in the College Invitational Football team who will take part in The EREA National Football Championship in 2019. Students will have the opportunity to compete against a network of EREA Schools at Nudgee College, Brisbane in April of next year. Thank you to all those students who trialled, and we look forward to bringing you more news as the team prepares for this fantastic event.
