Year 11 English Advanced students have been exploring the concept of imaginative writing their Common Module, Reading to Write.

Taking every day items provided as stimulus material, students had to include each item in a short story, with the twist of not being able to use the items for their intended purpose.

For example, they could not use the birthday candle on a cake as its intended use, they had to come up with an alternate use for it in their story. The lesson intention was for them to understand, using tactile objects as metaphors, how language can be manipulated and subverted depending on perspective, purpose, and audience. Listening to their planning conversations was quite eye-opening!
