Key Learning Area Coordinator: Simone Wampfler
Learning the language is the best introduction to another culture. It is a particularly powerful tool in the modern world where traditional boundaries, both cultural and geographic, are being diminished by new modes of communication.
Second language acquisition has been proven to improve communication and literacy skills, social and self-confidence, contribute to well-rounded thinking and give an understanding of the global community. Knowledge of a second language may lead to greater employment opportunities in the areas of banking, business, education, finance, hospitality, retail and tourism.
At St Dominic’s College students engage in their mandatory course of language study in Year 8, electing to study either Japanese or Italian. Japanese or Italian can then be chosen as an elective unit of study in Stage 5 and carried through to the HSC with courses for both Beginners and Continuers.
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
