Congratulations to Andrew Nicotera of Year 12 who has received the Marco Polo Award for Excellence in Italian Language and Culture in NSW Schools for 2020. Andrew was nominated for the award which is in its inaugural year. The award aims to highlight student excellence in student attitude to the Italian language and culture, academic achievement, development in proficiency and participation in relevant school and extracurricular activities.

Andrew’s nomination included his selection as Tench House Prefect as part of the School Leadership team for 2020-2021, his involvement in MCS soccer teams, his mentoring of younger students in languages, being an advocate for languages at the College through College events and his impressive results as part of the ImmerseME Games held earlier this year. This was further supported by his academic achievement in Italian. Since the language started at the College in year 2017, Andrew has placed first in the course since year 8 and currently holds language skills to an upper-intermediate level. He is a motivated and dedicated student to his Italian studies.

The jury’s citation reads:

In his dedication to Italian Language and culture, Andrew displays not only academic excellence, leadership qualities and participation in a significant number of extra-curricular activities, but devotes himself to supporting other students in the pursuit of excellence through pride in his heritage and meaningful interactions extending beyond the school community.

Andrew received a certificate and monetary reward. The certificate will be presented when school returns in February 2021. We wish Andrew all the best in his HSC year and with his language studies.
