We are challenged to be the master builders
The Investiture of the 2019 College Prefects signals the official commencement of the leadership journey of our senior students. The 14 elected leaders are challenged to be “the master builders’ so that, as Jesus came to serve, they too can serve the St Dominic’s community and add their story to the traditions of our great College. To Ben Xiberras (College Captain) and Julian Trini (College Vice-Captain) we entrust this servant leadership so that all can become witnesses and share in the building of St Dominic’s College. Our prayer for the assembly noted that Jesus was the master builder and we were the workers. Therefore, our schools leaders, along with their Y11 peers, are sent out to be the workers so that good deeds, which are entrusted in all of us, become the means in which we unite to continue the great works of previous leaders.
In a society whereby we constantly think of self, I presented a different message to the College community based on the famous speech by John F Kennedy when he stated:
“ ….. ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
I rephrased this statement so that our students understood that it is not always about receiving but their comes a time that a person must give, therefore I stated:
“… ask not what St Dominic’s can do for me, ask what can I do for St Dominic’s”
Simply put, this requires our students to be genuine people, using their God-given talents to the best of their ability; ensuring you are respectful to all; being diligent and sustained in your efforts in learning and being supportive of developing right relationships. If we want to continue to be a great school we need to become great people.
Great person, great school
The Co-curricula assembly on Wednesday 24th October was once again a celebration of the great contribution students make to the life of the College. Their involvement in so many activities allows each student to share his talents and support the Co-curricula programme of the College. I would like to sincerely thank the staff and students for their ongoing support of this programme for always wearing the blue and white with pride.
The Y11 Parent/Teacher Evening will be held on Wednesday 7th November. This evening is another great opportunity for parents of our Year 11 students to meet with their sons teachers and discuss their HSC Preliminary Course and prepare for their HSC year. Some students would be considering their options, so this time is most valuable in assessing their progress. HSC Preliminary reports will be distributed this week.
HSC Examinations continues with students eagerly look forward to the end of the exams. Some will finish over the next week however others will continue to study and prepare for their final exams. Please keep all our Year 12 students in your prayers as they continue with their HSC examinations.
Outstanding Fees. Could parents please attend to overdue school fees as soon as possible. Whilst many families have contacted the College Fees Office, a number of families are yet to do so. There are numerous ways in which you can pay your fees and these have been highlighted in previous newsletters and also appear on the back of your invoices. Families who are having some difficulties with their school fees can simple contact the College to discuss any financial problems that may have arisen and make arrangements that they can commit to. The College has a very clear process to follow for any families who may be encountering some financial hardship. I ask that you contact either Ms Powell or myself to discuss your fees should you be unable to finalise your account.
Congratulations to all our MCS Basketball teams who were successful last week in defeating Marist College Eastwood. Three of our four MCS cricket teams won their round two games. A great start to the season. The A grade Cricket team commenced their Downie Shield campaign with a solid win over St Patrick’s, Blacktown. Though missing key players through work placement, the team maintained great discipline and won a tightly fought contest. The team now moves into round three.
